My Articling Experience

My name is Josie Guglielmucci and I am currently articling for Kevin A. Filkow.  I have had some great experiences so far and I am very thankful for the wonderful job opportunity I was able to secure with Mr. Filkow.

Mr. Filkow’s practice is predominately criminal.  He deals with a wide variety of criminal matters which has provided for a greater learning experience and a continuous influx of knowledge.   Having Mr. Filkow as a principal has been very beneficial in many ways.  The combination of his 20 years of experience in the criminal law area and his relentless ability to achieve the best possible results for his clients has been extremely instrumental to my learning experience.

I have had the opportunity to acquire some practical experience in the criminal area of law.  I have drafted a number of court documents, made numerous appearances in court, conducted bail and sentencing hearings and I have assisted Mr. Filkow in preparing for trials.   Mr. Filkow`s capabilities in the courtroom are impressive and I am looking forward to learning these skills from such an accomplished lawyer.  Needless to say, I am very happy working with Mr. Filkow and I look forward to acquiring more knowledge throughout my articling term.

Courtroom Experience

Working with Mr.Filkow continues to be a rewarding experience. Recently I assisted Mr. Filkow in court. I had the opportunity to sit in on a trial. I got tremendous exposure to the workings of the legal system. I also picked up on some valuable key skills from Mr.Filkow that will be a great asset for my future law career. I was amazed at how Mr.Filkow was able to find so many inconsistencies within the witness’s statements which ultimately solidified his position.

The trial took place over two days and finally the time had come for the verdict! As I sat on the edge of my seat in the court room, the judge ruled in favour of Mr.Filkow!

It was great to see Mr. Filkow’s hard work pay off!

Internship Experience

My insight into the field of law has continued to grow and strengthen through my internship position with Mr. Filkow. I started this internship position in August 2010 and have continued on to this date. I wanted to assure myself that a career in law was suitable for me. In an attempt to pursue this career, I started calling different law firms to see if I could get an internship position with them. After countless tries I kept getting rejected; “We don’t have time to train students” I was repeatedly told. I had heard from my uncle that Mr. Filkow was a great criminal defense lawyer and he also had an office based in Richmond (my hometown). I called Mr. Filkow and after talking to him on the phone, he invited me into his office and within a week I started my internship! My duties have included sitting in on client meetings, going to court to sit in on trials, taking notes during trial and during client meetings. In addition to this, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze cases and present my information to Mr. Filkow. He has reviewed my notes and has given me tremendous insight that has allowed me to improve my case analysis skills. I have been fortunate enough to experience the practice of law both in court and in the office. This opportunity has allowed me to re-affirm my desire to pursue the career of law.
